Realitäts-Check Teil 1: Kannst DU es im Multilevel-Marketing schaffen? Reality Check Part 1: Can YOU Make It In MLM?

So you just got involved with an MLM/Network Marketing company. And since you’re reading my blog my guess is that you want to make it, just like so many others out there.

Stimmt’s?
And I BET you’ve heard something like: “It’s easy, OF COURSE you can do it!!!” Right?

There’re a couple of questions you should be asking yourself (assuming you know what MLM or Network Marketing means and how the system works):

1.: Was willst DU mit diesem MLM erreichen? / What do YOU want to achieve with this MLM?

Is it that couple of bucks you need so you don’t have that much month left at the end of the money and the tension with your better half won’t peak towards the end of the month?

Or do you want to go on your dream vacation with your family without maxing out your credit card?

Or do you just want to do something that “makes sense” aka lets you spend your time in a useful way instead of just vegetating in front of your TV?

Or do you want to quit your old job because you’re just tired of the crap your boss is giving you every single day?

Or any other reason…!?!

2.: How much time and effort are you willing and able to put into this endeavor – and how long are you willing to do that extra work – without seeing results?

There are people who call it a “numbers game” which is true – but it’s not the whole truth.

Some of the numbers (assuming your goal is in any way financial) that matter are:

Was ist Dein finanzielles Ziel?
What is your financial goal?
How many “average customers” do you need to achieve your financial goal?
How do you find one of those “average customers”?
How much time does that take you?
How many days/weeks/months/years will it take you to reach your goal?

And then again ask yourself the question: Are you willing to work this long? In your past, have you ever stuck to something for a period of time that long, consistently doing “that thing” even if it wasn’t fun sometimes?

Realiäts-Check Teil 2 ist schon in der Arbeit – also schau wieder rein!
Reality Check Part 2 is in construction already – so stay tuned!

Viel Erfolg!
To success!

Ben – first, thank you for translating into English, otherwise I would have missed out on this nice post. I think so many jump into MLM thinking it’s going to be a cake walk and when they aren’t finding quick success they move on to the next shiny object. Not being clear on what you want from the beginning leads to non-commitment. It does take a lot of consistent work and the results may come later rather than sooner. But the results can be so worth it. Thanks for putting things into perspective.

Hey Jill, thanks for the comment!
Actually I wrote it in English first and then translated it to German – it’s easier for me that way! Strange, right?!?

  2. Paul Klaszus Says:

it’s hard work… MLM, network marketing, and the like…

but thankfully, it’s the one kind of work that you can work hard at and get paid WORTH it!

    And it’s so worth it.

I think these questions and more need to be looked at with the upline and the newly recruited or the prospect at the very beginning rather that just selling and buying a dream. It is a disservice not to go through these types of questions and goals setting.

    Hi Ben,
You have a great start! People need to know the reason that they join a network marketing company. This is their “WHY” when they run into a slump of some sort.
These new people also need to be trained, as a lot of people join a network marketing company, but do not know how to go about building their business.
I’d like to jump ahead to your next post as the best part is yet to come, but I don’t want to steal your thunder, so I will contain myself.
Looking forward to the rest of the story!
    Linda

  6. Howie Perks Says:

    Hey Ben,

They are some great question a person needs to ask themselves before venturing into any business.

Many people get so excited about the possibilities network marketing brings but they aren’t willing to put forth the effort required to succeed.

I have seen so many people come and go in my business and it usually happens in the same way. Eyes are all lit up for the 1st couple weeks and then after a handful of “no’s” from their friends and family, they come out less and less and start tip toeing out the back door.

I found it helpful that in a game planning session to cover many of the questions above that way you can re-address to them along with their “why” when a new rep gets discouraged.

    In Success,
    Howie Perks

    • fitlineforsuccess Says:

      So true Howie,

that’s one of the reasons why I wrote this post. It also sorts out those who signed up “just for fun” and who would never have taken the first steps if they’d known there would be some obstacles.

It’s part of a selection process!

      Ben

  7. Eddie Espiritu Says:

When people enter network marketing with realistic expectations, they set themselves up for success. As a sponsor, it is our responsibility to help a prospect (BEFORE someone joins our business) understand exactly what is going to be required to achieve success. People respect this. Let’s run our business with integrity!

    • fitlineforsuccess Says:

      Exactly Eddie!
It’s both a help to the prospect and yourself. If you tell people up front what to expect, they’re less likely to drop out and they cause you less work, just because they know what’s about to come!
I consider it’s also a sign of professionalism and as you said, integrity.

Let’s make Network Marketing an industry of integrity, professionalism and respect!

  10. Perry A Davis Jr Says:

Ben your wrote “There are people who call it a “numbers game” which is true – but it’s not the whole truth. ” what a great statement. Sometime we make it sound like network marketing is a numbers game. You explain how the numbers should be used in the business, as a way to measure how we are doing in the business. The people are not the number game.

    • Ben Says:

      Hi Perry,

You’re right on the spot! The numbers are a way for yourself to know how much you need to do and they’re also a measure of how well you do it.

The people are the people. Humans, like you and me. Precious and to be treated nicely!

  11. Diane Cleak Says:

I do not speak German, but I have found your posts very interesting. The question you ask: How much time and effort are you willing and able to put into this endeavor – and how long are you willing to do that extra work – without seeing results? is very pertinent to our endeavours and gets people thinking. Best wishes, Diane

    • Ben Says:

      Hi Diane,
thanks for your comment! I hope you enjoy reading my blog!

Well, you don’t need to speak German, that’s exactly why I set up the blog bilingual! What you read in English is pretty much the same in German. I think it’s important for us MLM professionals to be candid and true about the nature of our business because anything else would harm not only the profession but our own reputation which is something we should really avoid!

So, let’s make Network Marketing an industry of integrity, professionalism and respect!

P.S.: I hope you read the second post as well: http://bit.ly/bDlNot And look out for the third!

  12. robdomanesq Says:

    Hi Ben,

I think it is great that you point out that people need to take a hard look at whether or not they have been able to stick with things in the past. It’s easy to get discouraged doing this and so if you don’t have a strong internal motivation, if your goals aren’t clearly defined in terms of what you actually might need to reach them, and if you don’t have the internal capacity to face the challenges that will inevitably rain down on you….then this might not be the best choice for you. Thinking about all of these things before you leap head first into the abyss is wise. Nice work! – Rob
